What is Boxxd?

Boxxd is a versatile digital container with apps, which can be used to simplify your daily work.

Boxxd is also an ecosystem built around its core component, the myBoxxd digital container.

Boxxd can be used as an off-the-shelf helpful tool in various situations:

  • As a lean work and lifestyle app ‘out of a box’ which can be used on any device
  • As a presentation tool
  • As an eBook

On your mobile you can use it to structure your thoughts, your documents.

In your team it can be used as a project organisations tool to support the team during the development of your idea such as a product, part, process or venture.

It works with your browser and doesn’t need any extra software.

What makes Boxxd so different?

Its simplicity, easy of adaptability, extendibility.

General use

Boxxd, similar to a Swiss Army Knife, can be used in various ways:

  • Container to keep all the necessary ideas and documents together.

  • Sharing Medium allowing people to share and sync project assets.

  • Presentation Tool helping team members to talk about ideas, concepts and as a introductory for other team members.

  • Authoring Tool to easily create and share documents independent of the end user devices.

  • Knowledge Base containing the knowledge needed for tasks, projects, processes.

  • Synergy Tool facilitating cross pollination between departments.

  • Foundation for Automation Tools which can extract information and feed other systems for building and production.

  • Packaging Tool where source and built assets can be kept together.

Built around

It is built around the concept of using plain text for authoring and a simple way of indicating structure (Markdown), enabling editing across multiple devices, offline as well as online.

It is a pluggable system with javascript utilities, plugins and templates.

Its components can be used on their own or pre-packaged.

Designed to simplify

  • Teams and Organisations who want to have a standardised way of organising assets.

such as:

  • Project Managers, the Project Managers Office (PMO) to standardise on how information is managed, stored and worked on.
  • Developers, Product Managers who want to collect their ideas about marketing, design, production, concerning a product in one place, which can be given to others.
  • Designers, Authors who want to have a organised way of sharing materials.
  • Entrepreneurs who are developing a venture and want to collect assets which they can share with partners.

Designed to be extendible

  • Add your own templates for your work and use
  • Add your own integrated help to support team workers
  • Add your own post-processing scripts to verify if things have been defined, to build things, to send information to others
  • Build your website from your texts.

Reasons for use

Some of the reasons why people and organisations use it are:

  • Standardised structure of materials

  • Ease of use

  • Structure gives thought to ideas of what to do and what is needed

  • Fast authoring of documents

  • One source for documents from which other formats can be generated

  • Automation can be built on top of it

  • Saves time when transferring assets to systems such as Enterprise Resource Systems (ERP)

  • Changes can be easily tracked and be rolled back (i.e. when using a change management tool such as git)

Areas of use

Typical functional areas of use are:

  • Contracts - Standardised format for the exchange of assets

  • Collections - Standardised way of collecting and holding information together

  • Website building

  • Automatic generation of services

  • Product development

  • Building projects

  • Business planning - Standardised form of knowledge and assets

  • For Lean Development, where the fast collection of ideas is important

  • Procurement

  • On the go, offline

  • At work or at home

  • In front of customer and partners

Boxxd creates value

Create 3% to 5% or even more value just by using boxxds…

Creating - Creating and fostering ideas:

  • Creating and editing works
  • Of what should be thought about
  • Use of templates to get going faster
  • Cross-pollination between processes

General working - Saving working time for the team members:

  • Where things can be placed, be found
  • Of the To Dos

Informing and sharing - Saving time in getting people on-board:

  • Of informing what it is about, of what is available

Reworking - Improving quality:

  • Forcing logical structure in content
  • In tracking changes

Exchange - Transferring information to systems and 3rd parties:

  • In structures for further processing and feeding into other systems (i.e. company or post-processes)
  • Standard data exchange

It’s components

Boxxd has several components to help getting the work done.

For working together:

  • A home page with an introduction about what the project is about (Home)
  • Slideshow (Talk)
  • Jotter file for keeping notes to be processed later (Jotter)

Getting things done:

  • Lists for collecting things to do (TODO)
  • Place for process know-how, i.e. for marketing, finances (Works)

Creating and building:

  • Place to keep the working files (Sources)
  • Place to keep the built and finished files (Items)

Supportive:

  • A place where old files can be kept (Archive)
  • “Wiring” functionality to enable automation processes
  • Inbuilt help documentation (.help)

The Home file

The Home file is the “entrance” for new team members to the project and its contents.

It can be read in the users browser and holds a synopsis of the project, a list of important documents, links to the inbuilt help and other relevant information for the team.

It is a simple text file, using Markdown syntax, and is like a slideshow, with a .html extension.

It can be simple or it can be built like a wiki.

Talk (Slideshows)

To support the presentation of ideas and concepts, Boxxd has a “give a Talk function” using a slideshow.

The user can quickly compose their ideas in a text file and the Boxxd scripts will turn it into a slideshow, which can be shown on the road, even with a presentation screen.

Boxxd has three slideshow scripts - from simple to more complex Prezi style, with rotating and moving slides.

The slideshows are stored in the Talk directory.

Jotter

Each team member can have their own Jotter file to quickly note things which need to be thought about later, collect snippets, or what ever.

TODO

Each team member can have their own TODO file to quickly note things which need to be done for themselves.

Tasks can be noted in Markdown format for easy reading.

Website

Boxxd can be used as a container for a website or it can contain the website for the project itself.

Included is a universal website template which can be used for a static website - i.e. without needing a database. The template can be used for a product, for an organisation, for a blog.

The template has a customizable landing page, a comments system (if needed), site search by Google, contact form, Google Analytics, and optional widgets for the sidebar.

To build the website ‘HUGO’ is needed - a free fast client software with integrated server, for building your website on the go.

Works

The Works directory is where team members can collect thoughts, process documents, etc.

To help structure this information, Works can be pre-configured with subdirectories which are similar to typical departments in organisations.

The subdirectories are based on the Value Domain Stack which is a universal naming structure, helping organisations to be more productive:

  • Ax Asset (CM, items)

  • Bx Build (Fabrication, Manufacturing)

  • Cx Customer (Adm, 1st Level Support)

  • Dx Design (Content, Software Development)

  • Ex Enterprise (Business Development, Legal)

  • Fx Finance

  • Gx Grid (IT, Geo facilities)

  • Hx Human (HRM)

  • Ix Incentive

  • Jx Joined Parties (Partners)

  • Kx Knowledge (BPM, Data Management)

  • Lx Logistic (Procurement)

  • Mx Market (Marketing, Sales, Advertising)

  • Ox Orchestration (Project Management)

  • Px Product (PLM)

  • Qx Quality (Generic SLAs)

  • Rx Resource

  • Sx Service,

  • Tx Teach

  • Ux User experience

  • Vx Value (User, social)

  • Wx World (Toplevel, CEO)

  • Xx eXchange (with others)

Creating and building “things” for the project

Boxxd has two standard directories for the “things” which are being created: Sources and Items.

The Sources is for the “things” being created and the Items for the “things” which are finished.

Users can create and keep their designs, source software, etc. in the Sources directory.
